I have been studying the Psalms again for the last two weeks. I am using the notes of C.H. Spurgeon along with the study notes from my Bible. There is so much to learn and so many times as I study I make notes as things speak to me in a special way. These are my notes from this morning.
You can no more cause a Christian, that has an intimate relationship with God, to doubt His reality than you can convince a man who is on fire that the flames do not exist!
The reality of the existence of God cannot be fully understood by the reasoning of the mind. It can only be fully embraced by the heart. The heart can be touched by that reality without more than just a basic understanding of the truth. Once the heart aligns itself with God, understanding begins to unfold with the help of the Holy Spirit, as you seek to know Him through prayer and the study of the Word.
He is the “teacher” and He will design the course to fit your level of comprehension and according to the plan He has for your life. So relax! You don’t have to be a great scholar to grow in the knowledge of Him. Seek Him and give yourself to the study of His Word. Get to know Him; not Him in general terms, but who He is to you personally. You have to “get into” God to “get to know” God! And, as your heart is made to know of His love for you, you can then reach out and share it with others. His Word says, “I have loved you with an everlasting love, therefore with loving-kindness I have drawn you!” It’s a genuine heart issue that opens your understanding of the reality of God.
C.H. Spurgeon said:
“Let the preacher (teacher) aim at the heart and preach (teach) the all conquering love of Jesus, and he will win more doubters to the faith of the gospels than any hundred of the best “reasoners” who only direct their arguments to the head.”
Even I, in spite of all of my studying, realize that there are some things my mind does not fully understand even after I have given myself to study them. There are some subjects or teachings from the Word that I cannot fully comprehend… but, my heart knows! Based on those things I do understand… I apply my faith to those that I may not. I don’t know how a mega-ton airplane is able to stay in the air (other than a few basic explanations that still are not very clear to me) but guess what? I still get on that plane at least once a year and go visit my family! As long as the pilot understands how it works and does his best to keep it up there, with God’s help, of course, I will continue to do it.
And I know I can trust God to take me where I need to go, so I will walk on… following Him as closely as I can; always praying for Him to open my understanding… but, knowing that even if I don’t “get it” I can still trust Him… because my heart knows!
