The Importance of Attending a Christian Church

One of the most important things you need to do after you accept Jesus as your Savior is to find a good church. What is considered a good church? One that teaches the Word of God!

You should visit a few and take time to get to know if the church is sound in its doctrine. If it isn’t…keep looking. Today with all the churches maintaining Web pages, you can even check out a church online and see what they believe; what ministries are available, and even the schedule of meeting times. There is nothing wrong with wanting to be certain about whether the church is right for you and will be a “good fit.” And, of course, pray about it. God will help you.

We spend a lot of time making decisions about things that are of far less importance, but sometimes will rush into this decision based on convenience or things like this:

Which church is the closest?
Do I like big churches or smaller groups?
Will I have to get dressed-up to attend this particular church?
Will there be a lot of people from my age group there?
Will the service schedule match my schedule?
What Bible translation does the Pastor use?

Not everyone will admit to these things being a consideration in their decision-making, but you know it usually is part of it. And it’s okay to take these things under consideration, as long as they are not your main priority.

Your priorities need to be on the more important issues. Is it truly a church that teaches the uncompromised truth of God’s word? Is this a place where you can embrace true fellowship with other like-minded believers? Is this an environment where you will be prepared and equipped to do the work of the ministry? These are the real issues you need to look into.

We need the support of the church if we are to grow in the knowledge of the Word, and do the will of God in our lives. We need to be around people who will encourage us, pray with and for us, and stand with us through our times of struggle. And, of course, we need to be prepared to do the same for them. This is what church is supposed to be about. Learning; living out what we learn, with the help and support of others, and loving God and one another.
